When regional books disagree overnight

Overnight disagreements usually start as a kindness: someone “just updates the number” so a dashboard looks calm. By morning, three sites swear their export is correct and none of them can show the authored line that caused the split.

Start with authorship, not balance

Ask which location wrote the last custody fact for that wallet ID. If your register cannot answer, you do not have a multi-location ledger — you have synchronized spreadsheets. Site tags and actor roles belong on every mutation.

Freeze the pending lane

Pause settlement claims while you inspect in-flight intents. Many conflicts dissolve when a transfer that left Seoul is still sitting in a vault hold state elsewhere. Teaching teams to narrate that gap is a core drill in our Distributed Custody Ledger Studio.

Publish an exception, then reconcile

Closing with a silent overwrite trains the wrong muscle. Publish the mismatch, attach evidence, and only then write a correction that keeps the original visible. Auditors replay stories; they do not applaud tidy fiction.
